My new ritual for 2015
This New Year’s Eve I was reading an article about how to make good habits stick. What a great time of year to start developing new habits that will help you succeed at your goals. The article stated that one of the most effective ways to cultivate new habits is to link them to things you do daily.
The author called them “if-thens.”
If I am doing this, then I will do that.
Example; If I catch myself with a negative thought, then I will replace it with an affirmation. So I began my “if-then” and I noticed most of my negative thoughts were in the shower. Seems odd that there I was cleansing my body and getting ready to have a wonderful day and my mind was racing with negative thoughts. Time to implement the “if-then”… If I am showering then I will repeat my affirmations.
Hence “showerfirmations” have become my new favorite habit.
What a better place to repeat your affirmations. I mean heck some people sing in the shower why not talk to yourself? (Maybe someday I’ll even sing my affirmations but that’s a whole different blog.)
Here’s how you can create this new habit too.
Gather materials. I went to Office Depot and got a plastic frame and suction cups so I could hang my affirmations in the shower. You can even use one of those clear plastic sleeves that fit into three ring binders.
Search for affirmations on the Internet and find your favorite ones. Spend some time doing this. Pick the best affirmations that resonate incredibly well with you.
Pick your stylish font and print out your favorite affirmations lengthwise on an 8” x 10” piece of paper. Make sure the font is easy enough to read while you’re in the shower. (Maybe with a little bit of soap in your eyes.)
Place the paper in the plastic frame or sleeve and hang it in the shower. Choose an area that is not getting doused with water the whole time.
Repeat your affirmations out loud every time you shower.
This new habit helps remind me of who I really am, who I want to be, and what I want to create. Not to mention it has made showering a lot more interesting.
Good luck and please share what your favorite affirmations or “showerfirmations” are for 2015.
