As a Personal Trainer & Fitness Expert I get asked a lot of questions about weight loss.  I have noticed that a few of the same questions keep popping up, especially these two…

 

Q. “I work out but I can’t seem to lose weight. How important is diet and nutrition to my weight-loss goals?”

 

A. Working out is essential for weight loss as it raises your metabolic rate and allows you to burn more calories each day. The bare minimum for losing weight is about 30 minutes per day of aerobic exercise 4-5 times per week. Even so, it may not be enough, depending on the amount and type of exercise you do. Activities like easy cycling and walking are good for cardiovascular exercise but don’t burn as many calories as you would think.

To amp up your weight loss goals, you need to incorporate a program of excellent nutrition and calorie reduction. This means eliminating sugar and processed foods from your diet and eating as many low calorie fruits and vegetables as possible. Food you prepare at home tends to have fewer calories in it than at restaurants or processed foods you buy at the store. Don’t starve yourself because your metabolic rate will drop in the face of a very low calorie diet. There are a lot of fad diets out there but the only thing that really works is calorie reduction through eating healthy, low calorie foods.

Q. “Why it is so hard to lose belly fat and love handles?”

 

When you are losing weight, you will lose body fat from all areas of the body, regardless of whether or not you are “targeting” certain areas of the body or not. Because we carry much of our excess body fat in the belly and around the waist, these are usually the areas that are the last to complete the fat loss process.

When we lose fat, we do not decrease the number of fat cells in the body—just the amount of fat within each cell. Our bodies naturally store more fat cells in the belly and hips so these are the cells that have the hardest time giving up enough fat to make a real difference in your appearance. Stick with your plan and you will eventually see the results you want.

 

So there you have it. But wait, there’s one more question I am hearing quite a bit this time of year…

 

Q. “Yikes it’s summer and I am going on vacation in a couple of weeks. How can I lose a few pounds quickly so I feel sexy in my bathing suit?”
